1. A historical region of northwest India and northeast Pakistan. Conquered by the Mughal emperor Akbar in 1586, it later came under the control of Afghanistan (1757) and a Sikh empire (1819). After 1846 it was part of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. 2. See Jammu and Kashmir. |
