Some compound words (like bus rapid transit, dog whistle, or identity theft) don’t appear on the drop-down list when you type them in the search bar. For best results with compound words, place a quotation mark before the compound word in the search window.

1. Any of several aromatic resinous substances used in ointments and incense.

2. See balsam poplar.

[Spanish tacamaca, tacamahaca, possibly from a Nahuatl source akin to Nahuatl tecamaca, perhaps variant of tecomahiyac (tecoma-, of unknown meaning + hiyac, older spelling of ihyāc, thing that stinks, from ihyāca, to stink); compare obsolete Spanish variant tecomachaca, tacamahac, and Nahuatl chacah, any of several trees of the genus Bursera yielding tacamahac.]
