Some compound words (like bus rapid transit, dog whistle, or identity theft) don’t appear on the drop-down list when you type them in the search bar. For best results with compound words, place a quotation mark before the compound word in the search window.

strep·to·zot·o·cin

(strĕp′tə-zŏtə-sĭn)

An antibiotic, C₈H₁₅N₃O₇, produced by an actinomycete (Streptomyces achromogenes), used primarily to treat pancreatic tumors affecting the Islets of Langerhans. Also called streptozocin.

[streptozōticus, epithet of the subspecies from which the antibiotic was isolated (STREPTO- + Greek zōtikos, maintaining life, pertaining to life; see g^wei- in the Appendix of Indo-European roots) + -(MY)CIN.]
