To look up an entry in The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, use the search window above. For best results, after typing in the word, click on the “Search” button instead of using the “enter” key.

Some compound words (like bus rapid transit, dog whistle, or identity theft) don’t appear on the drop-down list when you type them in the search bar. For best results with compound words, place a quotation mark before the compound word in the search window.

1. A form of money issued by a local government or private organization.

2. A certificate or receipt used to redeem a credit.

[Perhaps alteration of SCRIPT.]

1. Chiefly South Asian & Australian

a. Stock, as issued by companies.

b. The stock of a particular company.

2. Chiefly British A fractional share of stock issued to existing shareholders.

[Short for subscription receipt, receipt for a portion of a loan.]

Archaic

A wallet, small satchel, or bag.

[Middle English scrippe, from Old French escreppe, escrippe, from Germanic *skripja, variant of *skirpja, pannier or satchel woven from rushes; see scarf¹ in the Appendix of Indo-European roots.]
