adj. Brought back; returned. Used postpositively. [Latin : re-, re- + dux, leader; see DUKE.] Usage Note: The primary pronunciation of redux is (rēdŭks), with a long e as in ree. In our 2017 survey, it was accepted by 87 percent of the Usage Panel (and was the preferred pronunciation of 73 percent). The traditional variant (rē-dŭks), where the stress is switched, was accepted by two-thirds of the Panel. More recently, pronunciations with a short e (as in red) have been observed, but the Panel was less keen on them. Only 18 percent accepted the short-e pronunciation (rĕdŭks) with stress on the first syllable, and 48 percent accepted (rə-dŭks) with the stress on the second syllable. |
