To look up an entry in The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, use the search window above. For best results, after typing in the word, click on the “Search” button instead of using the “enter” key.

Some compound words (like bus rapid transit, dog whistle, or identity theft) don’t appear on the drop-down list when you type them in the search bar. For best results with compound words, place a quotation mark before the compound word in the search window.

(prē-pŭb′lĭ-kāshən)

1. The act, the process, or an instance of publishing something before its scheduled publication date: The publicist sought blurbs for the novel during prepublication. The project manager approved the prepublication of selected portions of the report.

2. A copy of something, such as a book or part of a book published before its scheduled publication date: received a prepublication of the novel for review.

Of or relating to the time just before a publication date: The marketing department was amazed by the number of prepublication orders.
