To look up an entry in The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, use the search window above. For best results, after typing in the word, click on the “Search” button instead of using the “enter” key.

Some compound words (like bus rapid transit, dog whistle, or identity theft) don’t appear on the drop-down list when you type them in the search bar. For best results with compound words, place a quotation mark before the compound word in the search window.

Sal·a·mis¹

(sălə-mĭs, sä′lä-mēs)

An island of Greece in the Saronic Gulf east of Athens. In an important naval battle off the island's northeast coast the Greeks, led by Themistocles, defeated the Persian fleet in 480 BC.

Sal·a·mis²

(sălə-mĭs, sä′lä-mēs)

An ancient city of eastern Cyprus. According to tradition, it was founded c. 1180 BC by Teucer, a hero of the Trojan War, and was visited by Saint Paul during his first missionary journey. The city was abandoned after AD 648.

sa·la·mi

(sə-lämē)

n. pl. sa·la·mis

Any of various highly spiced and salted sausages, made from beef or a mixture of pork and beef.

[Italian, pl. of salame, salami, from Vulgar Latin *salāmen, from *salāre, to salt, from Latin sāl, salt; see sal- in the Appendix of Indo-European roots.]
