To look up an entry in The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, use the search window above. For best results, after typing in the word, click on the “Search” button instead of using the “enter” key.

Some compound words (like bus rapid transit, dog whistle, or identity theft) don’t appear on the drop-down list when you type them in the search bar. For best results with compound words, place a quotation mark before the compound word in the search window.

Hun·ting·ton

(hŭntĭng-tən)

A city of western West Virginia on the Ohio River west of Charleston. Founded in 1871 as a railroad terminus, it has glass and chemical industries.

Huntington, Collis Potter 1821-1900.

American transportation executive who built the western section of the first US transcontinental railroad (completed 1869).

Huntington, Samuel 1731-1796.

American Revolutionary leader. He was president of the Continental Congress (1779-1781 and 1783), a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and governor of Connecticut (1786-1796).
