To look up an entry in The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, use the search window above. For best results, after typing in the word, click on the “Search” button instead of using the “enter” key.

Some compound words (like bus rapid transit, dog whistle, or identity theft) don’t appear on the drop-down list when you type them in the search bar. For best results with compound words, place a quotation mark before the compound word in the search window.

American religious leader who founded (c. 1919) a communal religious sect called the Peace Mission.

Baker, Josephine Originally Freda Josephine McDonald. 1906-1975.

American-born French entertainer who became a popular jazz dancer and singer in Paris during the 1920s and 1930s. During World War II she worked for the French Resistance.

British explorer who founded a settlement at Ceylon (1848), explored the Blue Nile region (1861-1862), and was the first European to reach Lake Albert (1864).

A peak, 3,286 m (10,781 ft) high, of northwest Washington in the Cascade Range east of Bellingham.
